Wines I love - McWilliam's Hanwood Estate Merlot 2002

What the label says:  The McWilliam family has bee at the forefront of Australian winemaking since 1877.  Drawing on six generations of winemaking experience, McWilliam's has entered a classic Australian Merlot.  McWilliam's Hanwood Estate wines are crafted using premium grapes from some of South Eastern Australia's most renowned wine regions.  The 2002 Merlot features spicy plum fruit aromas highlighted by cinnamon and mocha characteristics from partial oak maturation.  The flavorful palate is velvety with black currant and ripe plum flavors mingling with vanillin and clove notes.  An excellent partner to gourmet pizza or roasted duck.

Why I like this wine:  For an inexpensive wine McWilliam's Hanwood Estate Merlot is surprisingly smooth.  The velvety description on the label is 100% accurate.  This would be a good wine for an inexperienced wine drinker as it goes down very easy.  Like many Australian wines, McWilliam's Merlot is sweeter than California Merlot wines.  However it is not so sweet as to be false advertising as I've run into with other pure Australian Merlot wines like Yellow Bird Merlot.  Oddly McWilliams has a texture that feels slightly carbonated but not quite like a sparkling wine.
